Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
